If you’ve been repeating the same, consistent nighttime skincare routine for years, it’s time to switch things up.
We totally get it if you feel as though your current nighttime skincare routine is reliable and comforting. That can be a good thing, but it doesn’t last forever.
If you’ve been repeating the same, consistent routine for years, it’s time to switch things up. But how do you know if you’re in need of revival?
There are some signs that your skin might be showing you, like new breakouts, dryness, excessive oil, discolouration, or irritation.
You might assume it’s the weather or that time of the month… But it might just be your “trusty” old skincare products.
I mean, if something really works for you then stick to it, but be aware of what your skin is telling you and remain open to new technologies. Perhaps there is something that is even better formulated for your skin and you don’t even know it.
If you’re worried about venturing into a new regimen, fear not! Follow these next steps to help revive your nighttime skincare routine.
If you want to try something new, start slow
It’s important to slowly introduce new products into your routine. Why? It’s not a great idea to shock your skin entirely. It’s recommended to switch out one product at a time and allow your skin to adjust for a while.
On the other hand of not changing your products up, switching them up too often can cause damage and cease progressive results. It takes a while before products actually bring on noticeable changes, possibly up to 8 weeks for certain results.
Exfoliate every once in a while
Do not exfoliate your face every day, it is not needed. But every once in a while, it is important to properly exfoliate the dead skin cells off of your face.
To do so, you can either use a chemical exfoliant, granular substance, or an exfoliation tool. This will get rid of the excess dirt and impurities and allow your face to start fresh for the week!
Switch to a gentle cleanser
Hear me out, if you are using a cleanser that is doing wonders for you, then feel free to skip this step. If you feel like giving something else a chance, stick around for this one.
Many expensive cleansers are loaded with tons of chemicals (some of which might interfere with your other products). In order for everything to work together accordingly, it’s vital to keep it minimal where you can.
Dermatologists have constantly recommended drugstore cleansers such as CeraVe and Cetaphil. Try it out and see how it works for you, maybe less really is more!
Start steaming your face
You don’t have to do this every night, but it is a good addition for those nights where you need some extra relaxation after a long day.
If you don’t have time for a full facial, just spend 5-10 minutes opening your pores and you will feel brand new.
After you’ve cleansed your face, fill a bowl with water (just a little over half way), microwave it for about 5 minutes, place the bowl on the table, hover your face over it, place a towel over your head to trap the steam, and stay there for about 7 minutes or so.
You can spice this up with herbal steams or essential oils as well! Be sure to do your research beforehand to make sure you’re taking precaution.
Add in a serum
If you don’t already have a serum in your skincare routine, you have to get on board immediately!
Serums are even more effective than moisturizing creams, so having both a serum and cream will surely keep your skin hydrated.
The concentration in serums work to penetrate your skin deeper and faster than cream products, so make sure to apply it before your moisturizer and let it sink in.
If you already use a serum, you could amp it up by specifically using one with vitamin C. Vitamin C helps strip a layer of your skin, therefore exposing a softer, youthful appearance of your face! Who wouldn’t want that?
Rethink your makeup remover
If you use makeup remover wipes or lotions, consider switching to micellar water. It is much gentler on your skin and is more environmentally friendly. When you use makeup wipes or lotion on cotton pads, chances are you’re tugging at your skin much harder.
Not only does micellar water effectively remove your makeup in a softer fashion, it also provides proper cleansing (and helps save the environment)! This is a perfect option for sensitive skin.
Don’t skip out on toner
Maybe you don’t know enough about it, or just feel too lazy to incorporate it into your daily routine (it happens), but toner is actually a beneficial step. Toners can help close up your pores after you’re done cleansing, to prevent impurities from getting into your skin.
They’re great for oily skin that is susceptible to clogged pores and acne. You can also use toners to add active ingredients to your regimen, such as retinoids and exfoliants that you might be lacking in another product. A great, affordable toner is The Ordinary’s Glycolic Acid 7% Toning Solution.
Try a lip scrub
No one likes the feeling of dry, dead skin on their lips. Lip balms, masks, and salves are great but they won’t do anything for the dead skin cells.
It’s important to exfoliate your lips at the end of the day, and then follow up by applying a hydrating lip mask for the night.
A great vegan and cruelty-free option is Lush Cosmetic’s Cherry Lip Scrub. They have lots of alternative flavours to choose from!
Get your mask on once a week
Masks are a great way to target problem areas on your skin. Sometimes we get too busy or simply forget to apply a weekly mask. If you make a habit of masking up at least once a week, you could see a huge difference.
Once again, pay attention to the patterns of your skin, and make sure the mask is helping you. If it’s doing more damage, try using a different one that targets a different issue. You can switch out your masks depending on what is acting up that particular week.
A great mask to shrink your pores is Cold Plunge Pore Mask by Olehenriksen. For dry skin, a good choice is the Jet Lag Mask by Summer Fridays. If you suffer from oily skin, we recommend GlamGlow’s SUPERMUD Clearing Treatment.
Invest in a facial roller
After you’ve applied your serums, toner, and moisturizers, a great way to massage them into your skin is with a facial rolling device.
From jade and rose quartz rollers to Nurse Jamie’s massage roller, there are many to choose from! The benefits of these tools can help sculpt, tone, and rejuvenate the look and feel of your face.
The stimulation of blood flow instantly helps uplift and brighten your skin, giving you a firm, healthy glow.
If this list requires you to add a few more steps to your routine, that’s perfect! Self-care has no limit. Do what’s best for your body. Hopefully this regimen works wonders for you.
